What is intelligence, what is artificial and what is real

The world, the language and the machine that learned from both.

We are the first generation to live alongside a machine that appears to think. Not one that computes faster, or lifts heavier, or stores more — but one that reasons, writes, creates, and surprises us. That is new. And it is understandably unsettling.

But to understand what artificial intelligence truly is — and what it is not — we need to first understand intelligence itself. Where it comes from. What forms it takes. Why it exists at all.


Three forms of intelligence

Intelligence is not one thing. It did not emerge all at once, and it does not work the same way across its different expressions. There are at least three distinct forms, each with its own origin and its own logic.

Form I — Physical world reasoning

This is the oldest form. Before language, before mathematics, before abstract thought — there was the need to navigate a physical world. To catch, to avoid, to predict. This intelligence is not learned in a classroom. It is built through millions of years of evolution, encoded in bodies, sharpened by survival.

When a cat leaps and lands perfectly, it is not calculating trajectory. When a bird rides a thermal, it is not solving fluid dynamics. They are running an internal simulator — a model of how the world behaves, built from inherited instinct and lived experience. Humans carry this too. It is why you catch a falling glass without thinking, why you feel the road through a steering wheel, why a surgeon’s hands know where to go before their mind does.

This form of intelligence is deeply embodied. It lives in the interaction between a body and a world, accumulated over time, shaped by consequence. You do not reason your way to it. You earn it through existence.

In animals: A crow bends wire into a hook to retrieve food. An octopus opens a jar it has never encountered. Neither has been taught — they simulate and adapt.

In humans: An experienced carpenter knows a joint is wrong before measuring it. A climber reads the rock face instinctively. Embodied knowledge that cannot be fully put into words.


Form II — Language, the codec of thought

This is where humans made their most decisive leap. Not just thinking — but finding a way to transfer thought. To take what exists inside one mind and reconstruct it, reliably, inside another.

Language is not intelligence itself. It is a translation system — a codec — between the inner world of concepts and the outer world of shared symbols. Spoken words, written text, mathematical notation: all of these are mappings. They compress an idea into a transmissible form, and allow another mind to decompress it.

Mathematics is perhaps the purest example. When we write E = mc², we are not just stating a fact. We are encoding an entire relationship between energy, mass, and the speed of light — one that any trained mind anywhere in the world can reconstruct exactly. The symbol is not the thought. But it carries the thought across time and space with extraordinary fidelity.

This is what separated humans from every other species. Not bigger brains alone — but the ability to accumulate knowledge, to build on what others discovered, to compress the work of a generation into a book that the next generation can read in a week. Language made culture possible. And culture made everything else possible.

In animals: Bees communicate direction and distance through dance. Dolphins use signature whistles as names. Rich, but bounded — no accumulation across generations.

In humans: Newton writes his laws. Two centuries later, an engineer on another continent uses them to build a bridge. Language is the bridge between those two minds.


Form III — Abstractive and connective thinking

This is the most elusive form. It is not about reacting to the world, nor about encoding and transmitting ideas. It is about navigating ideas themselves — moving freely in a space of high-level concepts, finding unexpected connections, and generating something genuinely new.

Darwin did not observe natural selection by running experiments. He connected two domains that no one had connected before — the artificial selection practiced by animal breeders, and the pressures of the natural world — and saw that the same mechanism could produce all of life’s diversity. The insight came before the proof. It arrived as a connection, not a calculation.

This form of thinking operates before language in some sense. The connection is felt or glimpsed first — as a shape, a tension, an aesthetic sense that two things belong together. Language comes after, to crystallize and communicate it. Which is why so many scientists and mathematicians describe their breakthroughs as arriving non-verbally, and the hard work being the translation into communicable form.

Animals may share something of this too. Play behavior in many species suggests the ability to explore possibilities beyond immediate need. But the human capacity to operate at extreme levels of abstraction — connecting thermodynamics to economics, or music theory to mathematics — appears to be in a different register entirely.

In animals: Great apes use tools in novel ways. Ravens plan for the future. Some capacity for abstraction exists — the boundaries are still being discovered.

In humans: Kekulé dreams of a snake eating its tail and wakes up with the structure of benzene. Abstract thought arrives in images, feelings, metaphors — then gets translated into science.


How AI fits in here

What AI actually is

Artificial intelligence is, at its core, an extraordinarily powerful function approximator. Given enough examples of an input and an output, it learns to map between them with remarkable precision. That is the whole mechanism. Everything else is scale. The counterargument is that at sufficient scale, something beyond mimicry emerges — and that may be true. But emergence within a mechanism is not a different mechanism. A more powerful function approximator is still a function approximator.

AI does not navigate the physical world through a body. It does not discover connections through lived experience. What it does — with breathtaking effectiveness — is learn transformations. And it turns out that almost everything humans do can be described as a transformation.

How it got here

What gave AI access to the human world was language. And that changed everything. It took decades to get there — from rule-based systems to statistical pattern recognition to deep learning cracking vision — each wave capturing a broader slice of human capability, until transformers reached language and found the master key.

Why language was the key

Language describes everything. Truly everything. Objects, emotions, processes, relationships, history, science, philosophy, art. It is the most complete representation of the human world that exists. And crucially — unlike images, sounds, or sensations — language had been accumulating for thousands of years before AI arrived to learn from it.

This is the key insight: language was not just training data. It was a complete civilizational archive. When AI learned from it, it did not just learn grammar or facts — it absorbed the structure of how humans think, argue, discover, describe, and create. The codec that humans built to transfer thought between minds turned out to be the perfect medium for transferring it to machines.

The limitation follows directly: what has never been expressed cannot be learned. The pre-verbal insight. The embodied knowledge in a craftsman’s hands. The felt sense of a moment no one thought to write down. These remain out of reach — not because AI is not powerful enough, but because the data was never there to begin with.


Why machines will never think like humans — and why that is fine

Human intelligence was not designed. It emerged under pressure — shaped by death, desire, fear, and time. It is always embedded in a life. Machine intelligence has a designer, an objective, and no stakes. One is the original. The other is a mimic. Both are real. They are simply not the same thing.

And history tells us how this ends. Every generation has lived through a disruption that felt like it changed the definition of being human. The printing press. The industrial revolution. The internet. Each time, after the initial shock, the next generation absorbed the tool into their natural environment — and moved on.

We did not stop walking when we built cars. We will not stop thinking when we build machines that think alongside us.

We are the ones who have to figure it out consciously, in real time. The next generation will simply live with it. That is both the burden and the privilege of this particular moment.


The original and the mimic will coexist. What remains distinctly human — the pre-verbal, the embodied, the motivated, the biographical — is not a limitation of AI. It is a definition of us.
